About This Publication

This title is out of print indefinitely and is not available for purchase

Knowledge of science and technology is increasingly important to enable everyone to understand and participate in critical debates for our future. This paper brings together three powerful issues:

  • Citizens right to know more about science and technology;

  • Effective provision for widening access to science for all; and

  • Injecting the excitement of discovery and fun into lifelong learning.

The paper advocates means of widening participation and highlights examples of good practice. It discusses the varying participation by different target groups of learners as an aspect of social exclusion, and makes recommendations for different agencies including national and local government, professional institutions, the media and education providers.
