About This Publication

Since 2006, NIACE has sought to celebrate the memory and legacy of Professor John Tomlinson, particularly the contribution he made as Chairman of the Committee that produced the seminal report, Inclusive Learning (FEFC, 1996).

Chapter 6 of Inclusive Learning examined the factors that contribute to effective teaching and learning. This, the fourth John Tomlinson Memorial Lecture, explores why teaching matters. Who better to deliver a lecture on the importance of teaching than Toni Fazaeli? Toni joined the Institute for Learning (IfL) as its first Chief Executive in June 2008. As a qualified teacher, Toni has taught in prisons, further education (FE), adult and community colleges and providers, as well as schools. She has observed many teaching sessions in the FE sector and has met and discussed teaching and learning with hundreds of teachers and tutors.

Before joining IfL, Toni was a deputy director in the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, which is now the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). During her four years there, her policy responsibilities included the further education workforce, teaching and learning, personalising learning and learner voice.

This year, NIACE invited the National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) to partner with us for this lecture. We are grateful for their support. NIACE would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) for their continued sponsorship of the event.
